How do Single Sex Classes Effect Student Learning?
I am a future teacher who recently came across information on www.singlesexschools.org that promotes the use of single-sex classes. According to the National Association for Single Sex Public Education, the group that sponsors the site, a study was done at Stetson University which compared the scores of students taught in a co-educational environment with those taught in a single-sex classroom on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
The results of the study, according to the site, indicate that the students taught in single-sex classes far outperformed those who were taught in a co-educational setting.
I'm left with many questions, though. How legitimate is the study to which they refer? Have the results of that study been replicated elsewhere?
But the real, guiding questions of my research is this: How does single-sex classrooms affect students academically? Socially? Psychologically?
As a teacher, would I prefer to teach in a single-sex classroom? As a parent, would I want my child to learn in a single-sex environment?
I'll pursue these questions in the coming days and weeks and would appreciate any input you may want to give.
